What if I e-filed on time but my return got rejected after the filing deadline?

If your return is rejected, you must correct any errors and resubmit your return as soon as possible. If your return is rejected at the end of the filing season, you have five days to correct any errors and resubmit your return to avoid penalties.

If you owe taxes, you must still pay by the tax return due date (April 15, 2026 for tax year 2025) to avoid penalties.

Some returns keep getting rejected through no fault of the taxpayer. This is most commonly due to incorrect data on the government's end, causing a mismatch and subsequent rejection. If this applies to you, file a paper return, as it can take weeks (or even months) for the government to make the necessary corrections in their system.
