How do I indicate that I can be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return?

If you’re filing your own taxes, but could be claimed as a dependent on another person’s return (your parent or caregiver, for example), you have to indicate this on your tax return–even if they’re not claiming you.

Here’s how to modify your personal information if you have not selected the dependency data initially using TurboTax Online/Mobile:

  • Go to the Personal profile screen and under your name, select Revisit.

  • Continue until you reach the Let's check for some other situations screen.

  • Scroll down and select the box Another taxpayer can claim me as a dependent on their tax return.

  • Depending on your situation, answer either Yes or No to Will this person claim you on their 2025 tax return?, then Continue.

    • If you answered No, you will be asked another question about the person who can claim you on their tax return.
