How do I apply my refund to next year's (2022) taxes?

SOLVEDby TurboTax2055Updated April 15, 2022

You can apply some or all of your 2021 tax refund to next year's taxes. When you come back to file your taxes in 2023, the amount you applied will show up as a credit.

Tip: If you pay quarterly estimated taxes, apply a portion of your refund to next year's first-quarter estimated tax payment, which is due April 18. This can help prevent underpayment penalties on next year's return.

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account
  2. Open or continue to your return, if you don't already have it open
  3. In the search bar type: apply federal refund to next year
  4. Select the Jump to link in the search results
  5. Follow the instructions on the Apply Refund to 2022 Taxes screen
  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account
  2. Open or continue to your return, if you don't already have it open
  3. Tap the menu icon
  4. Under the Federal Taxes option tap Other Tax Situations
  5. Then, tap on Additional Tax Payments, and Apply Refund to Next Year
  6. Select the first option (apply all or part of it) when asked how you want us to handle your 2021 refund and swipe right to continue
  7. Enter the amount you want to apply and continue
