How do I fix e-file reject SEIC-F1040-535-04?

by TurboTax98 Updated 3 months ago

This rejection can happen when a dependent's date of birth or Social Security number (SSN) was entered incorrectly, and is indicated by this error message:

SEIC-F1040-535-04 For each child on Schedule EIC (Form 1040), 'QualifyingChildSSN' and 'ChildBirthYr' must match that in the e-File database.

Less commonly, this rejection can be caused by a mismatch with the IRS database, or if the dependent's Social Security number was issued late last year.

Select your version of TurboTax for instructions on how to fix it.

Note: If your TurboTax navigation looks different from what’s described here, learn more.

Follow these steps to make sure your dependent's info has been entered correctly:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax and select Fix my return.
  2. When you see the message Welcome back to TurboTax, select My Info from the menu.
  3. On the Personal info summary screen, verify the Social Security number and birth date for your dependent.
  4. The birth date should be in the United States month/day/year format (MM/DD/YYYY). For example, June 11, 2013, should be entered as 06/11/2013, not 11/06/2013.

If the birth date or Social Security number needs to be corrected:

  1. Select Edit next to the dependent.
  2. Continue until the Tell us about [dependent] screen to fix the birth date, then select Continue.
  3. To correct the Social Security number, continue until you reach the screen, Now let's gather [dependent's] social security number.
  4. Once corrected, select Continue.
  5. Select File from the menu.
  6. At the Welcome back screen, select Continue (Don't select Fix my return, as you've already done that).
  7. Follow the instructions to proceed with the filing process.

If the birth date and Social Security number are correct:

It could be that the info in the IRS database is incorrect or your dependent isn't in their database yet. You won't be able to e-file even though your information was entered correctly. You'll need to print and mail your return.

To print your return, select File in the left menu and follow the instructions to file by mail.

Follow these steps to make sure your dependent's info has been entered correctly:

  1. Open TurboTax and select Fix my return.
  2. When you see the message, Welcome back to TurboTax, select the Personal Info tab.
  3. On the Personal info summary screen, verify the Social Security number and birth date for your dependent.
  4. The birth date should be in the United States month/day/year format (MM/DD/YYYY). For example, June 11, 2013 should be entered as 06/11/2013, not 11/06/2013.

If the birth date or Social Security number needs to be corrected:

  1. Select Edit next to the dependent.
  2. Continue until the Tell us about [dependent] screen to fix the birthdate, then select Continue.
  3. To correct the Social Security number, keep going until you reach the screen, Let’s Tie Up One More Thing.
  4. Once corrected, select Continue.
  5. Select the File tab and follow the instructions to proceed with the filing process.

If the birth date and Social Security number are correct:

It could be that the info in the IRS database is incorrect or your dependent isn't in their database yet. You won't be able to e-file even though your information was entered correctly. You'll need to print and mail your return.

You'll need to leave the TurboTax app and sign in to TurboTax Online in a browser:

  1. Sign out of the app by selecting More, then Sign Out.
  2. Open your browser (either on your device or a computer) and sign in at MyTurboTax.com (use your app login).
  3. Fix and refile your return in TurboTax Online using these instructions.

Tip: To prevent this rejection next year, call the Social Security Administration (SSA) at 1-800-772-1213 to verify their records (this is where the IRS database pulls from). If the info is wrong, please allow 4–6 weeks for correction.
