MSI Wrapper Error while installing TurboTax for Windows

Some TurboTax customers are receiving a MSI Wrapper Error (also known as Windows Installer Error 5) while installing TurboTax for Windows.


  1. Right-click your taskbar and select Task manager.
  2. Look for Intuit update service in the process tab and end process.
  3. Switch to the Details tab and look for MSIexec.exe and end process on all instances showing.
  4. Install Turbotax again.

If this doesn't work:

  1. Check for and install any available Windows Updates.
  2. Try this Microsoft Fix-It Tool.

If you're still experiencing an issue:

  1. Ensure you can view hidden files and folders.
  2. Navigate to C:Users<username>AppDataRoamingMicrosoft.
  3. Rename the Crypto folder to CryptoOld. (If it does not allow you to rename, create a new folder called CryptoOld and copy the contents of the current Crypto folder to the CryptoOld folder you just created.)
  4. Install TurboTax again.
