Why was my bank account auto-debited for TurboTax fees?
When you filed your tax return, you chose Pay With My Refund, which lets you deduct your TurboTax fees from your IRS tax refund instead of paying them with a credit or debit card.
Per the Refund Processing Agreement, you authorized Intuit to debit your bank account if your refund didn't cover your fees:
In addition, by clicking the "I Agree" button below, you electronically sign and authorize Intuit (through its third party processor) to debit the TurboTax Fees, Additional Products and Services Purchased, and any applicable sales tax from your bank account number identified in the Agreement below, in the event that you do not receive a tax refund that is sufficient to pay for them.
You can also be auto-debited if you signed up for Pay With My Refund and your refund is sufficient, but the IRS is still holding your refund 36 days after your original estimated refund date. In this case, you'll get the same email notifications from us, except we'll debit the Pay With My Refund fee (if any) in addition to your other TurboTax fees.
Frequently asked questions
Will I be notified before my account is auto-debited?
Yes, you'll receive a series of email notifications regarding your TurboTax fees. These updates will provide instructions on how to pay online, offer opportunities to defer payment, and provide final confirmation before an auto-debit occurs.
Can I pay my TurboTax fees early to avoid the auto-debit?
Yes, you can pay your outstanding TurboTax fees early by following the “pay online” link provided in the email notifications you receive ahead of the auto debit. You'll need your TurboTax order number and the ZIP code listed on your tax return to complete the payment. To prevent a duplicate charge, your payment must be made no later than 12:00 PM PT on the Thursday prior to your scheduled auto-debit date.
I need more time. Can I delay the auto-debit date?
If you need more time, you may be eligible for a one-time deferral that gives you an additional 21 days from your original auto-debit date to pay your fees. You must request this deferral no later than 12:00 PM PT on the Thursday prior to the original debit date. Please keep in mind that fees can only be deferred once. You can request the deferral yourself by following the “payment options” link in the email notification you received prior to the auto debit, or by contacting customer support at 1 (800) 446-8848.
Can I change the bank account that will be auto-debited?
The bank account you entered on your return can only be changed before your e-file is submitted and accepted. Once your return has been e-filed and accepted by the IRS, the bank account information can't be changed. You can also make a payment ahead of the auto debit date by following the “pay online” link in the email notification received to use an alternate payment method.
What happens if I don't have enough money in my account and I get an overdraft fee?
If the initial debit attempt fails due to insufficient funds, TurboTax will make one additional attempt to collect the fees the following week. If an auto-debit transaction results in an overdraft or Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) fee, this is a fee assessed by your bank and generally cannot be reversed or refunded by TurboTax.
