Do I need to file a federal return this year?

SOLVEDby TurboTax5858Updated December 30, 2021

You'll definitely need to file a 2021 return with the IRS if you had:

  • $400 or more in self-employment net earnings (gross income minus expenses); or
  • Marketplace health insurance and you received advanced payments for the premium tax credit.

If you're being claimed as a dependent on someone else's 2021 return, like your parents', go to Do I need to file my own taxes if I'm a dependent? Otherwise, if you're not being claimed as a dependent, refer to the chart below.

Tip: Even if you're not required to file a return this year, file one anyway if you want to recover 2021 federal tax withheld from your paychecks.
