How do I amend my 2021 state tax return to claim the Maryland Child and Dependent Care Expense Credit?

SOLVEDby TurboTax64Updated January 03, 2024

Some Maryland customers might not have claimed the Child and Dependent Care Expense Credit on their 2021 state taxes, which may have caused an overpayment of their state taxes.

To find out if you’re owed an additional refund, compare your refund/balance due amount from your original return with what you see now in TurboTax.

Sign in to the TurboTax account you used to prepare your 2021 tax return. If your refund/balance due amount has changed, we recommend you amend your state tax return.

To amend your return, select your product and follow the instructions below.

  1. Note the original refund or balance due amount for your Maryland income taxes. We recommend you check the paper/PDF copy of your return, or your banking records, to verify the correct amount.
  2. Sign in to the TurboTax account you used to prepare your 2021 return.
  3. In Tax Home, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents, and choose 2021.
    • If you have not already done so, we recommend that you print a copy of your original 2021 tax return for your records by selecting Download/print return.
  4. Select Amend (change) return and then select Amend Using TurboTax Online.
  5. Check your refund/balance due on your return:
    • If the amount is the same as you noted in step 1, the child and dependent care expense credit was calculated correctly and no amendment is needed. You may stop here.
    • If the amount is different, you will need to amend your state return to receive your child and dependent care expense credit.
