Can I file my return after April 15, 2024 without being considered late?

SOLVEDby TurboTax690Updated November 22, 2023

For most taxpayers you can't file your return after April 15, 2024 without it being considered late, as April 15, 2024 is the deadline to submit your return, pay taxes owed, and file an extension.

The only exception to this is if you're a U.S. citizen or resident alien and you are out of the country on the April 15, 2024 deadline.

The IRS considers you out of the country if:

  • You're living outside the United States or Puerto Rico and your main place of business or post of duty is outside the United States or Puerto Rico; or
  • You're on duty in the military or naval service outside the United States or Puerto Rico

If you're considered out of the country by the IRS (see above requirements), your filing and tax payment deadline is automatically extended until June 18.

Although you won't be assessed late-filing or owe late-payment penalties if you file and pay by June 18, the IRS still charges interest on taxes not paid by April 15, 2024 whether you're out of the country or not.

When you file your return, attach a statement explaining which of the two situations apply to you.

If you need additional time after June 18, you can request an extension until October 15 to file your return. However, a late-payment penalty (plus interest) will apply to taxes not paid by April 15, 2024.
