TurboTax uses various methods to calculate your tax liability depending on the specifics of your tax situation. To see how your taxes are computed, you can look at the worksheets used by TurboTax.
How to see how the tax was calculated and the tax computation worksheets, in TurboTax, depends on which version you're using; TurboTax Online or the desktop software,

  • TurboTax tailors its calculations based on your income, deductions, and other details, so checking the Tax Smart Worksheet helps you see the specific methods and formulas applied to your situation.
  • Different worksheets, like the Qualified Dividends and Capital Gains Tax Worksheet, for example, are used for figuring out exceptions to the regular tax rates, and are not always submitted to the IRS with your tax return, although they should be kept with your records.

To locate these worksheets and see how the tax is calculated, follow the steps below for your version of TurboTax:

For TurboTax Online:

  1. Log into your TurboTax account.
  2. Go to Tax Tools in the left menu, then click Tools and select View Tax Summary.
  3. On the Tax Summary page, click Preview My 1040 from the menu.
  4. Check the Form 1040 Worksheet (between lines 15 and 16) for the Tax Smart Worksheet, which breaks down how your taxes were calculated.
  5. You can also print or save the return as a PDF and choose to include all worksheets for a complete review of the numbers.
