Self employed

It means you actively participated in your own business, not the business of the nail salon.   If you receive a 1099-NEC for work you performed, you are considered an active participant in your own business/self-employment.   To the nail salon, you are a client/independent contractor, not an employee.   Am I an employee or an independent contractor?
