Self employed
If the issuing organization provided you with a 1099-NEC, they likely consider you as self-employed or an independent contractor.
This form is used to report non-employee compensation, which typically means the income is considered self-employment income
To file your 1099-NEC in TurboTax, follow these steps:
- Open or continue your return. Be sure you are logged in for the link in Step 2 to work.
- Navigate to the self-employed income section:
- TurboTax Online/Mobile: Go to self-employed income.
- Or Search (magnifying glass top right of screen) for self employed income (use this exact phrase, don't add a hyphen) and select the Jump to link.
- Answer Yes on the Did you have any self-employment income or expenses? screen.
- If you land on the Your 2024 self-employed work summary page, select Review next to the work you're adding income for.
- Answer the questions on the following screens until you arrive at Let's enter the income for your work.
- Select the form that applies to your situation and select Continue.
- You can enter the info from your 1099 form on the following screens.
Since the 1099-NEC is typically used for non-employee compensation, it is often considered self-employment income. Therefore, you would report it on Schedule C. However, if your income from the student teacher support program is not considered self-employment, you might need to report it differently. Reach back out if this is the case with additional details.
