Each form should be entered separately in TurboTax as they usually report different types of income:
- 1099-G: This form typically reports unemployment compensation or state tax refunds.
- 1099-MISC: This form reports miscellaneous income, such as medical leave benefits.
First enter your 1098-G using steps below:
If your 1099-G shows an amount in box 1, go here for alternate instructions, as the steps below won't work.
Otherwise, if your 1099-G has amounts in box 2, follow these instructions:
TurboTax Online
- Go to the the Did you have any of these types of income? screen and select Yes.
- On the State and local tax refunds and other government payments screen, select State or local income tax refunds even if not reported on Form 1099-G and select Continue.
- On the Did you get a state or local tax refund in 2024? screen, select Yes.
- On the Tell us about your refund screen, enter your total refund received in 2024.
- Enter the amount in box 2 (state or local income tax refunds, credits, or offsets).
- If you received multiple 1099-Gs for the same state or locality, both with the same tax year in box 3, enter the box 2 sum.
- For example, you received two 1099-Gs from Colorado. They both have 2024 in box 3, and their box 2 amounts are $1,000 and $800 respectively. You'd enter $1,800 in Total refund received in 2024.
- Enter your total of all your payments and withholding.
- Enter the total taxes you paid to the state or locality for the same tax year as the refund (this includes withholdings as well as estimated tax and other payments).
- You can get this amount from your state or local tax return for the tax year of the refund. Look for a line near the bottom, often bolded, that includes the phrase total payments.
- Enter tax year of refund, which is box 3 of your 1099-G.
Next enter your 1098-MISC using steps below:
You don't need to combine your 1099-G and 1099-MISC forms. Each form reports different types of income and should be entered separately in TurboTax:
- 1099-G: This form typically reports unemployment compensation or state tax refunds.
- 1099-MISC: This form reports miscellaneous income, such as medical leave benefits.
- Navigate to the 1099-MISC section:
- TurboTax Online/Mobile: Go to 1099-MISC.
- TurboTax Desktop: Search for 1099-misc and select the Jump to link.
- Answer Yes to Did you get a 1099-MISC?
- If you have already entered a 1099-MISC, on the 1099-MISC Summary screen select Add another 1099-MISC.
- Enter the info from your form into the corresponding boxes.
- If you need to enter boxes 4–6 or 8–17, select My form has other info in boxes 1–18 to expand the form.
