UPDATE: Thanks for all the responses and help! I got my dad to call American Express again and specifically tell them to close the account in my name, instead of just removing me as an authorized user. They did so at the beginning of January, so it has now been reported to the credit bureaus and my score increased by 104 points! Thanks for the advice!
