Tax help for military filers

Thanks LenaH

I feel that I need to clarify the military deduction section of the worksheet that is causing confusion.

Military Buy Back, also known as a Military Service Deposit, is a benefit of Federal Civil Service that gives you the ability to receive retirement benefits based on your military service. As a general rule, your military service time is creditable for Federal Civil Service purposes if it was active service terminated under honorable conditions. To buy back military time, veterans must deposit money that covers their military service. The deposit is processed through DFAS or the veteran's agency's Personnel or Human Resources Office.

We know that “Joe” had twenty years of federal civil service. We know that “Joe” had ten years of active military service that he “bought-back” otherwise he could not use this portion of the work sheet. We know that “Joe’s” ten years of bought-back time was added to his twenty years of Federal Civil Service to bring his total to thirty years of creditable service for retirement.

Likewise I had twenty six years of federal civil service and I bought-back eight years of active military time. This gave me a total of thirty four years of creditable service for retirement.

The calculation is very simple:  divide years of military service by years of civilian service and then multiply by federal service pension attributable to military service to get the Federal civil service pension deduction.
