Tax help for military filers
You will need to contact the Treasury Department issues the form 1099 but the Military provided the information to the Treasury Department. You should start there to see if you can get it changed. Until you can get it changed you can use the method below to remove the income from you. And you can go back to amend 2020 and 2021 also.
First, there is a way around this being taxed to you. Nominee interest is interest that actually belongs to someone else. Sometimes, taxpayers receive a form that is addressed to them, but actually reports income that is taxable to someone else. In cases like this, the taxpayer must first report on his or her return the full amount of the interest.
Here is how to report it on your return:
Go to Personal Income
Wages and Income
Select Interest Income
Enter the name of financial institution
Select I will type myself
Enter Interest in box 1 of form 1099-Int
Click next - It ask if any of these situations apply
You select that you want to adjust the interest amount then Continue
In the adjustment Box enter the amount of the interest that applies to your EX
and the reason then continue
Now to adjust the amount off
Search for Adjustment to income
Other Adjustments then type in Ex's Name and social security and amount.
That should remove the amount from your return but shows that you acknowledged it and provide the IRS with who to tax.
