Tax help for military filers

I am assuming your spouse is in the military. Even though you both lived in VA for part of the year,  you may have the only one that was a considered a resident for VA. If your spouse is in the military, their state of residence was probably their Home State of Record other than VA and this is why Turbo Tax is prompting you to file a separate Va return.

Here is a link to Va website that explains filing status in the State of VA. Now the all important topic, how to file !!

  1. Select the State Tab in your return.
  2. Assuming you entered all of your information correctly in the MY INFO section of the return, there should be three states that appear. There should be Virginia, Maine, and your spouse's Home of Record state.
  3. When you begin working on the Va return, the program will inform you that you need to file Married Filing Separate.  You do not need to do anything additional because the program will lead you through all the steps.
  4. Your spouse would not need to file a VA return if he/she did not earn money in VA other than military pay.  That would be reported in the Home of Record state.

I am assuming again that this is a military return but reach out and correct me if this isn't the case. Also, reach out if you have any additional questions as this is a unique situation that doesn't happen often.
