Tax help for military filers
Ok, I will have to look in on his information about that. What he goofed on and is having to correct are the following items:
1. He marked himself as a dependent, when he is actually not
2. He marked that he did not pay more than 1/2 his own support (thinking the Army is actually supporting him). I told him "you have a job and you support yourself 100%, regardless of that you live in barracks and such"
3. He did not include money paid into a Roth IRA he setup last year
4. He did not include his 1099-INT for his bank account, but it really did not matter as his interest income was only $80.00 this past year and really under the limit to report.
5. And he did not include his 1099-INV on a fund he bough into, again, his numbers were less than $50 on that as well.
It looks like they are saying he's getting X amount back and then having to pay back a larger X amount. I told him it might be better to wait and not send the amendment this year and see if the IRS contacts him. But this is something we will discuss as we make one final adjustment (# 2 from above, we did not change it until I had an answer about it)
