Retirement tax questions

The first place to look is Line 72 on Schedule 5 of your 2018 1040.

If your $6,015 overpayment for Social Security is there, then we follow that to the Form 1040, Line 17. There is a space on line 17 for an amount from Schedule 5, and it should be included on Line 17 in the column to the right. Line 18 is a combination of Lines 16 and 17. Line 18 is your total Payments. Next look at Line 15, this is your total tax. If Line 15 is greater than Line 18 then you will get a balance due on Line 22. If Line 18 is greater than Line 15 then you get a refund which should be on Line 19 and Line 20a.

If all this shows exactly as you would expect it to, and you have not gotten a refund, I would first make sure that your return was filed and if it was I would contact the IRS.

You can contact the IRS by calling 1-800-829-1040
