Retirement tax questions
In order to contribute to an HSA, you must be enrolled in a qualified HDHP, not covered under a secondary health insurance plan, not enrolled in Medicare, and can’t be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return. If another taxpayer is entitled to claim the individual as a dependent, the individual cannot claim a deduction for an HSA contribution. This is true even if the other person does not actually claim the dependent.
