Retirement tax questions
This is mainly a user community forum, not a direct route to TurboTax Support. Was there an offset on your Federal refund? If so, that is a decision by the Treasury Department's Offset Program working in conjunction with the IRS. TurboTax has no control over an offset.
The Treasury Offset Program will use all or part of a federal tax refund to settle certain unpaid federal or state debts.
Offsets to Pay Certain Debts. The Treasury's BFS (Bureau of the Fiscal Services) may use part or all of a tax refund to pay certain other debts such as:
- Federal tax debts.
- Federal agency debts like a delinquent student loan.
- State income tax obligations.
- Past-due child and spousal support.
- Certain unemployment compensation debts owed to a state.
See this IRS article for more info about refund offsets, including contact info and the appeals process. Taxpayers who wish to dispute an offset payment should contact the agency receiving the offset payment.
