Retirement tax questions
If the credit is being calculated on your return and you are sure you do not qualify for the credit, you could try deleting Form 8880. Generally this credit is calculated automatically based on your circumstances (so I would not recommend deleting the form unless you are sure you do not qualify for the credit).
To delete a form in TurboTax:
- Log in to your return, and click the Tax Tools link in the left hand navigation bar.
- Click Tools in the menu that drops open in the left hand navigation bar.
- In the Tools Center box, click on Delete a Form.
- In the list of forms in your return, delete Form 8880.
- Check the return to make sure the credit has been removed.
If the credit has not been removed, there are entries in the program that meet the requirements to take the credit. You will want to check your W-2 entries in box 12 for retirement entries (usually with a code D) or IRA contributions, and to make sure whether there are any indicators that show you were a student for the year (one disqualifying factor for the credit).
