Retirement tax questions
If you feel your W-2 is incorrect, try to reconcile your weekly paychecks received. Review your bank statements or add up all of your paystubs. If the numbers do not match your W-2, show your findings to your employer and ask for a Corrected W-2.
If you claimed any exemptions on Line 5 of your W-4, then it's possible that federal income tax would not be withheld. Single taxpayers are not taxed on the first $10,400 of W-2 income. So, if your total income for 2017 is $7,213, you will not pay federal income tax. The state tax will depend on the state where you live.
If you have children or attend college, you will still want to file a tax return as you may be eligible for tax credits and get a refund.
Or, if you are at least age 25 but under age 65, you may qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit.
