Retirement tax questions
You will have to file part-year returns for both Michigan and Montana for 2018. Prepare your MI return first since you were not living there on December 31.
Each state has different rules on the income they tax.
Michigan: You must pay Michigan income tax on income you earned, received, or accrued while living in Michigan.
Montana
- For the period of time that you are considered a resident, all of your income is taxable to Montana no matter where you earn it.
- For the period of time that you are considered a nonresident, only your income that is considered Montana source income is taxable to Montana.
