Retirement tax questions

Your Social Security benefits should appear on line 20a of the 1040 and the taxable amount appear on line 20b.

You can check this by previewing your 1040, using these steps:

  1. While in your return, click Tax Tools > Tools  (in the black bar at the side of the screen).  [See Screenshot #1, below.]
  2. In the Tools Center, under Other helpful links click on View Tax Summary. [Screenshot #2]
  3. Click on the Preview my 1040 link in the black bar at the side of the screen.  [Screenshot #3]
  4. On the 1040 Preview screen, scroll down to lines 20a and 20b.  [Screenshot #4]

If your Social Security income does not appear on the 1040, then you can enter it by following these steps:

  1. Click on Federal > Wages & Income
  2. Scroll down to the Retirement Plans and Social Security section and click on the Start/Revisit box next to Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099).
  3. On the next screen, mark the Yes button and click Continue.
  4. Continue through the screens, entering the requested information.
