Retirement tax questions
No, form 1099-R and form W-2 are not the same--they report different types of income.
The W-2 reports your gross wages and federal and state income tax withholding from your job. To report wages from a W-2:
- Click on Federal Taxes > Wages & Income.
- In the Wages and Salaries section, click on the Start/Revisit box.
Form 1099R reports distributions from retirement plans. These distributions are not always taxable--it depends on the code entered in Box 7 of the Form 1099R. To report retirement income from form 1099-R:
- Click on Federal Taxes > Wages & Income.
- In the Retirement Plans and Social Security section, click on the Start/Revisit box next to IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R).
