Retirement tax questions

No, you do not enter any information about Roth 401k contributions in the Roth IRA section of your return.

If you are contributing to the Roth 401k as a self-employed person, then there is a place to enter that information.  Otherwise, if your contributions are through an employer they will be shown on your W-2 and entered along with your other W-2 information.

For the case of a self-employed 401k contribution, use these steps to go to that section of your return:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)

  • This opens a box where you can type in “self-employed retirement” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)

  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to self-employed retirement

  • Click on the blue “Jump to self-employed retirement” link and enter your information
