Retirement tax questions
There are two areas of your return where a home office can be claimed. One is for self-employed taxpayers reporting income and expenses on Schedule C. The other is on Form 2106 for employees receiving a W-2.
If you are not self-employed, but you are an employee paid with a W-2, use the following steps to go to Form 2106 to enter the details of your home office:
-
On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
-
This opens a box where you can type in “2106” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
-
The search results will give you an option to “Jump to 2106”
-
Click on the blue “Jump to 2106” link
Note: Due to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, employee business expenses claimed on Form 2106 are no longer deductible on your Federal return for tax years 2018 through 2025. These expenses can still be entered into your return because some state still recognize employee business expenses as a deduction.
