Retirement tax questions

You would enter the 1099-R information as if you received an IRS form 1099-R.  At the screen Do any of these situations apply to you? select I need to file a substitute 1099-R

 

Follow these steps to report the transaction: 

 

  • Across the top of the screen, click on Personal.
  • Across the top of the screen, click on Personal income.
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on.
  • Scroll down to Retirement Plans Social Security.
  • Click Start / Update to the right of IRA 401K Pension Plan Withdrawals.
  • At the screen Let Us Enter Your Bank and Brokerage Tax Documents, select Skip Import.
  • At the screen Who gave you a 1099-R, select Financial institution or other provider (1099-R).  Click Continue.
  • At the screen Enter your 1099-R providers info, enter information.  Click Continue.
  • At the screen Enter your 1099-R details, enter Box 1, Box 2a and Box 7 information at a minimum.
  • At the screen Is the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box on this 1099-R checked?, select No.  Click Continue.
  • At the screen Where is your distribution from?, select Other distribution.  Click Continue.
  • At the screen What kind of retirement plan do you have?, select information.  Click Continue.
  • At the screen Do any of these situation apply to you?, select I need to file a substitute 1099-R.

You may not be able to electronically file and you may have to mail to the IRS supporting documentation.
