Retirement tax questions

No. Your BENEFEDS payments are not included in your Form 1099-R.

Because you paid BENEFEDS directly while waiting for your annuity to be finalized, those payments happened completely outside of the OPM system. Therefore, OPM has no record of that money.

To gain an accurate picture of what you paid for the year, you will need three different sources:

  • Your final 2024 paystubs
  • Your BENEFEDS Account
  • Your OPM Annuity Statement

Note: Your premium payments may be deductible. However, you must itemize deductions and your total medical expenses must exceed 7.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI).

If you are a retired public safety officer, there is a special provision to exclude up to $3,000 of health care premiums. In order to claim this credit, however, you will need to enter it manually because it is not included in your Form 1099-R. To claim that credit, you will answer the prompts when completing your Form 1099-R information.
