Retirement tax questions
Please note, the backdoor Roth instructions are for when you are making nondeductible Traditional IRA contributions and convert them to a Roth IRA. You made contributions to a 401(k) not Traditional IRA. All you need to to is enter the Form 1099-R and answer the follow-up questions:
- On the "Did you move this money from a 401(k) to a Roth 401(k)?" screen answer "No"
- On the "Did you move the money to a Roth IRA?" screen answer "Yes"
This correctly will be entered on line 5 of Form 1040.
If you did not make any Traditional IRA contributions then please delete you entry in the IRA contribution interview.
