Retirement tax questions

TIN is a generic term. As mentioned above, a Federal tax ID number IS a type of TIN. The terms are often used interchangeably. When reported to you by a company, it is a 9-digit number, and often it is shown to you formatted as xx-xxxxxxx i.e., 2 digits, a hyphen, and then 7 digits, but some companies may just show the 9 digits without a hyphen. If it's not a 9 digit number, then what does your Payer's Federal ID number look like?
