Retirement tax questions
It's OK; many people don't get it, so I'll explain. NJ tax law "double taxes" my TP contribution "portion" of RMDs unless I tracked ALL of them over 40+ years. I have a spreadsheet of all TP personal and school-matched contributions (IRA, 401a and 403b) to prove that NJ already taxed a portion of them. But a second spreadsheet is required to prove all "unrecovered contributions" from ALL past Worksheet C's. The problem is compounded when I have to separate and track SP contributions for 40+ years, along with SP unrecovered contributions!!
TT's NJ forms can help with some past record keeping, but TT assumes that you have done a lot of this before entering RMD 1099-Rs. However, the "known issue" with TT worksheet C (since at least 2017!) is that the first column only puts an 'x' in the box for IRA 1099-R entries, and does not 'x' the box for 403b and 401a 1099-R entries as "taxable income"; so the result reported on the NJ-1040 line 20a is way off!!
In any case, there's no need to reply. unless you can refer these 2 questions to a TT Expert in NJ-1040. Perhaps an "Employee Tax Expert" can fix TT worksheet C. and also allow combined TP and SP entries as well. But thanks for trying to help.
