Retirement tax questions
Since you were an employee and this was job related, the answers must force the program to get the correct entry. Follow these steps:
- Log in to your return.
- Go to income
- Scroll down to Other Common Income
- Select Income from 1099-MISC
- Edit/ Start/ Revisit
- Enter income -the income should be in box 3,
- Enter tax if any withheld in box 4
- Continue
- Describe the reason - travel stipend
- continue
- None of these apply
- Continue
- Did this involve main job?
- No -this is for the worksheet to get the right answer despite it being your job
- Continue
- How often do you get?
- Got in 2024 - even if you receive this each year so the program won't think this is another job
- Continue
- Intent to earn money?
- No again, obviously you work for money but this needs to be no for the worksheets
- Continue
- Do you have another?
- No
- Continue
The NSF REU is a housing allowance and is considered taxable income. See NSF 23-601: Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU). If you have a 1098-T, you can add the $6,000 of scholarship income there.
