Retirement tax questions
Annette,
First, yes, both of the 1099-R forms are from OPM, with the same Fed ID #, and both have our personal CSA # on them.
I noticed that when I entered the info for our separate CSA 1099-R forms, that after filling out the all basic info from all boxes on my CSA-1099-R form, TTax asked me specifically for my form: "Since box 5 on your CSA-1099-R can hold more than one item, tell us how much of your box 5 amount o $1,821 is for health insurance." Then there is a box: 'Health Insurance Payment Amount' into which I entered 1,820.90. So I guess somehow TTax knew the 1099-R was for an OPM CSA retirement account.
That question and opportunity to enter a definitive answer was NOT asked when I entered info for my Spouse's CSA 1099-R, so why not? Why is TTax ignoring or asking different questions for each filer on a 'married filing joint' return? TTax knew mine was a CSA 1099-R, probably based on the Fed ID #, then why not for my Spouse?
I also noticed on the 'Forms View' of her 1099-R, that the checked "Source Form:" box was for "1099-R" ---- so again TTax somehow saw it as just a 1099-R and/or determined it was NOT a CSA-1099-R --- most likely because TTax didn't ask the question. Regardless, when I put the check mark in the CSA-1099-R box, there was also a check mark automatically updated in the box below which said, 'If Spouse's CSA-1099-R, check this box".
Even after doing that, nothing changed on the 'Medical Worksheet or the 1099R Summary' forms. So again, what is wrong with the TTax programming? I also saved the file, closed the program, and re-opened it, but no change to those forms.
Thanks for trying to resolve this issue, even though it doesn't affect us. I guess you like a challenge too. ;P)
Regards, Chuck
