Retirement tax questions
To dmertz… thank you for your input … my 1099-R from the Defense Finance and Accounting only has 7 in box 7… there is not a D on my form.. but I fiddled around with putting both a 7 and a D also just a 7 also just a D … nothing worked
i am curious if you have first hand experience on recording Military Retirement pay, which is a non qualifying “pension”? In their menu driven options on the review screens, Turbo Tax only gives 2 options for trying to resolve the “issue” ..either choose as a 403B (which it is not) or choose “other qualifying pension” which it is not .. for a work around turbo tax chat advisor had me choose #2 option which the next screen asks about RMD … which is not applicable to military retirement but turbo tax advisor again trying to find a workaround when she suggested I put my entire retirement pay as a RMD .. that resulted in showing I owed $53,000 separate obviously that “solution” did not work … then she suggested putting zero in and the program would not accept it … I have done both the scan and manual input of data … same results
the program will not let you proceed to filing the form unless you resolve issue… the Turbo Tax chat “expert” last resort was to punt the form and mail it in… so much for filing .. that is when I asked for a refund and now I will try and find a CPA to do my taxes
Turbo Tax needs to FIX this instead of suggesting workarounds … not just for me but for the probably thousands of military retired people who use Turbo Tax
