One Spouse Retired & Receiving SS Benefit
My husband retired at the age of 67 this year and has started receiving SS monthly benefits. Social security gave him a lump sum as well. I still work a full-time job, not retired or of retirement age. I'm sure this lump sum payment will throw him over the yearly threshold to pay federal taxes on.
Do we have to continue filing a joint return or can I file "married filing separately" to avoid my income increasing the taxed amount?
How should I proceed?
