Retirement tax questions
Yes, you can amend your state only, but the amendment feature isn't available just yet.
First you need to wait after your state return is fully processed, that means you have received the refund, or waited 21 days after the original state return was accepted.
Here's how to amend your state in TurboTax:
- Open your return in TurboTax.
- Select Add a state. This will allow you to make changes to your return without initiating a federal amendment.
- Select State Taxes, then Your States from the left-side menu.
- Select Edit to the right of Virginia.
- On Your 2023 Virginia taxes are ready for us to check, select Edit to the right of Other situations.
- Select Start to the right of Amend a Tax Return.
- Choose I'd like to amend my 2023 Virginia return, then select Continue.
- Answer the next few screens according to your situation.
- On the screen What is the Reason for Amending? select Other, then Continue.
- On the left-side menu select Federal, then Wages & Income.
- Scroll down to IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R), under Retirement Plans and Social Security, select Add/ Edit to the right.
- Select Edit to the right of the 1099-R you need to correct.
- Continue until you get to Enter your 1099-R details from (name). Edit your state tax at the bottom, the Continue.
- Select State Taxes, then Your States from the left-side menu.
- Select Edit to the right of Virginia.
- On Your 2023 Virginia taxes are ready for us to check, select edit to the right of Other situations.
- Select Start to the right of Amend a Tax Return.
- On the Amend a Previous Virginia Return screen, select I want to review my amended Virginia return now, then select Continue.
- Keep going until you either e-file your amended Virginia return, or get a message about printing and mailing it.
Two final notes, if you itemized your federal return, adding additional state tax withheld may change your federal result too. In that case you may want to amend both.
And, if you try to do this before the amendment form is enabled, it will look like it's working, but nothing will happen.
