Retirement tax questions

So, after about 2.5 hours on the phone with a guy from Turbo Tax, it turns out that the Turbo Tax product is not yet ready to properly handle people who had an 8915F form last year. So, if you took out a Covid disaster withdrawal in 2020 and paid all the taxes in the 3 years since, then your amount of taxable income you reported last year is going to pull forward into your return for this year. You can't delete the forms or find any other way around it that does not constitute fraud.

It's going to take a few weeks, but Turbo Tax is going to add a question that will ask if you have paid all the taxes on your Covid withdrawal over the last 3 years. Once that question is in there, you can answer it correctly and your income will be recalculated without the value from the previous year. So, we just have to wait. Of course, they can't tell us when it might be ready. The IRS has already published the forms, as of 1/3/24. So, it's better than previous years. The tax pro I talked to made a guess of maybe mid February to try again and see if the question is there.

Hope this helps other people facing the same shocking amount of reported tax due.
