Retirement tax questions

If I understand the question correctly: 

  • The state distribution on the 1099-R is posted to box 16. 
  • If the state indicated is Ohio, it means that that portion of the distribution is taxable in Ohio.  
  • This is very often the state you live in.
  • If you disagree with that, the first place to start is with the plan administrator.
