Retirement tax questions

There is a way to do this since other people have found themselves in a similar situation. You can mark yourself as full-time student. See below for full instructions.

Indicating that you were a full-time student as described above is simply a workaround to cause TurboTax to remove the Form 8880.  Doing so has no other effect on your tax return.  With no Form 8880 included, there is no indication in your filed tax return as to how you answered this question; you are not falsifying any information on your filed tax return.

In the Retirement Savings Contributions Credit section, you should indicate that you were a full-time student in order to disallow the credit.

To do so, follow these instructions:

  • Login to your TurboTax Account
  • Click "Take Me To My Return"
  • Click "Federal" from the left side of your screen
  • Click "Deductions & Credits" from the top of your screen
  • Scroll down and click on "Retirement & Investments"
  • Click "Start" next to "Retirement Savings Contribution
  • Click "Yes" to "Did you contribute to a qualified retirement plan in 2018?"
  • Click "Yes" to "Were you a Full-Time Student for at least 5 months in 2018?"
