Retirement tax questions
TurboTax Online will prepare Form 2106, if applicable, based on your entries.
In the Federal section under Deductions and Credits:
- Select Show More next to Employment Expenses
- Select Job Expenses for W-2 Income
- Answer the questions that appear on the subsequent screens
Employee Business Expenses are not allowable on the Federal under current law for most types of employees. The only categories of employees eligible to deduct these expenses are:
- Armed Forces reservists
- Qualified performing artists
- Fee-basis state or local government officials
- Employees with impairment-related work expenses

Several states, including California, still allow the expenses on the State return to the extent they exceed a percentage of adjusted gross income.
