Retirement tax questions

Try this link to the SSA-1099 in TurboTax and see if it will let you enter you reenter your form by following the prompts.  Click here: Form SSA-1099/Form RRB-1099

 

It should bring you to the screen before you enter your Form SSA-1099, then follow the prompts.

 

Also try this method:

  1. Log into TurboTax .
  2. Click on Federal from the menu on the left-hand side and then click on Wages & Income at the top.
  3. Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security, click "Show More" and then click on "Start" to the right of Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099.)
  4. Enter the amounts from your form(s) where indicated. Net benefits go in Box 5 of the form and the income Tax Withheld will be recorded in Box 6.

 

You may have to start over and reenter your return in TurboTax.

 


Here's how to clear and start over:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax and open or continue your return, if you haven't already.
  2. Select Tax Tools from the left menu, then Clear & Start Over.
  3. Answer Yes to confirm.

To Properly Remove your SSA-1099 Income :

  1. Click on My Account located at the top of the screen.
  2. Click on Tools.
  3. Under Other Helpful Links select Delete A Form.
  4. Select the form you would like to delete and Click Delete.

 

To properly enter a Form SSA-1099 in TurboTax (All SSA-1099 forms get entered in the same place):

  1. Open (continue) your return in TurboTax
  2. In the search bar, search for the term Social Security benefits and then select the Jump to link at the top of your search results
  3. On the screen Did you receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits in 20XX? answer Yes and select Continue
  4. On the next screen, check the box beside Social Security benefits (Form SSA-1099), then enter the amounts from your form(s) in the boxes provided
    • If you received multiple SSA-1099s, add up the amounts for each box and enter them together
    • Don't include SSA-1099s for dependents. Those should be reported on the dependent's return, but only if they are required to file a return (this is uncommon)
  5. Select Continue and follow the on-screen instructions
