I'm no tax pro but I received interest as a beneficiary on a VA life insurance payout and had the same question. I was told by the VA that no part of a VA payout is taxable to the beneficiary. Not the life insurance payout amount, not the dividends, not the interest and not the premium refunds. Was told it is all exempt from taxation and that the VA does not even have 1099 forms.
