Retirement tax questions
Thanks for posting that, but has it been verified as acceptable to the IRS or vetted by accountants? There is zero information at the website identifying the credentials of the author etc. Thanks. (Norton does say the website is safe, but that's a separate issue.) I did check the first few lines of the report that came back for an SLV buy I made this year, and they were accurate.
You do have to understand the process explained in my post above and use the cost basis for the month preceding your sale to calculate the gain/loss on a given lot and how to report the capital gains and losses on the fees. They need to be reported separately from the gains and losses on shares.
I have only used 2021 data, so I'll have to see how it handles long term vs. short term gains. Does it identify the difference between the two for lots held less than one year for part of the year and over one year for part of the year for example?
Also, I did not see anywhere to enter sales of shares during the year. Where is that located? There is nothing in the program for cost basis calculations for SLV for example. I guess they just expect you to run the program twice if you have one sale and 3 times if you have two sales etc. using a different share number each time (you'd have to treat each sale and the remaining shares separately)?
