Yes, you probably do need to trust that they are telling you the truth until you know different. 

 

To cover yourself, keep both forms and details of your contact with the company as well as records that show the amount your were actually paid. Hopefully they are telling the truth and you won't hear anymore about it. 

 

By the way, if the 1099 forms were filed electronically by the company, you should be able to see what amount was reported to the IRS later this year. 

 

You can check your wage and tax transcript to get this information, but 2021 information is not likely to be final for at least a few months.
