Retirement tax questions

You may not have identified the type of income on your 1099-NEC in TurboTax. To ensure you have entered the form correctly and assigned it as the right kind of income please follow these steps:

 

  1. Sign in and open or continue your return.
  2. Search for 1099-NEC and select the Jump to link.
  3. Be sure to note the question at the bottom of the screen "If you had nonemployee compensation, it gets reported on a 1099-NEC."
  4. If your 1099-NEC is not from self-employment, answer the questions and continue through to enter the information from your form. 
  5. Open or continue your return in TurboTax
  6. Search for self employed income (use this exact phrase, don't add a hyphen) and select the Jump to link at the top of the search results
  7. Answer Yes on the Did you have any self-employment income or expenses? screen
    • If you land on the Your 2021 self-employed work summary page, select Review next to the work you're adding income for
  8. Answer the questions on the following screens until you arrive at Let's enter the income for your work
  9. Select the form that applies to your situation and Continue
  10. You can enter the info from your 1099 form on the following screens
