Retirement tax questions

If you took money from your 401-K as a loan it will not be listed on your income tax, but if you withdrew money from your 401-K you should get a Form 1099-R that will give you the details of the distribution.

If you are in doubt you should contact the plan administrator, or your HR department to confirm what the distribution was for.

Also, if it is a loan be sure that you understand how it works.

If you do have a 1099-R, this is how to post it.

  1. Click "Wages & Income" on the top

  2. Scroll down to  "IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R)"

  3. Answer "Yes" to the question "Did You Have Any of These Types of Income?"

  4. Click "I'll Type it Myself"

  5. Choose "Form 1099-R, Withdrawal of Money from 401(k) Retirement Plans, Pensions, IRAs, etc."

  6. Click "Continue"

  7. From here TurboTax will walk you through entering your Form 1099-R
