Retirement tax questions
Yes, first go to:
- Go to federal>wages and income>all income
- Retirement plans and Social Security>show more
- Ira (401K), pension plan Withdrawals(1099R) Start
- You will answer the first question yes that asks if you received the 1099R even though you haven't.
- Answer the next questions. You will eventually get to screen where you will record 1099R information to the best of your ability. Make sure you choose a distribution code for Box 7. You may need to contact the issuer that should have issued you the 1099R so that you have complete and factual information to report.
- Eventually, you will arrive at a screen that asks Do any of these situations apply to you? Here you will select I need to file a substitute 1099R. Then finish out the section that asks about this form.
If you are creating the substitute form, be careful. The IRS expects you to make a reasonable effort to get the form and prescribes the steps to take. The idea is not to use one just because you don't want to wait for it. Also, you won't be able to efile the return if you submit the 1099R.
