A few years back I rolled over a company 401K to Fidelity which resulted in an overpayment which I paid back from my Rollover IRA. .
A few years back I rolled over a company 401K to Fidelity. The company sent a letter stating they overpaid and I should pay back a certain amount. Fidelity suggested to sell funds from the Rollover IRA which they sent to me and I sent the company a certified check. The IRS sees the IRA withdrawal as early withdrawal and wants to tax it accordingly.
I'd like to find out how I can prove to the IRS that this was a return payment for an overpayment. Unfortunately I don't have the company letter anymore...
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
